Most people understand the importance of using a quality camera and quality film when taking pictures but few realize how important the photo paper is to the finished product. Many people, too, do not realize that there are many types of photo paper available and may have a difficult time selecting the correct photo paper to meet their particular needs at any given time.

There are two broad categories of consideration: purpose and brand. Magnetic photo paper would be an example of purpose, while Canon photo paper would be an example of brand.

Under the purpose category, laser photo paper and inkjet photo paper are probably the two most commonly known types. The advent of high quality printers that are capable of producing high quality images has literally skyrocketed the use of these types of photo papers.

For most consumers using the photo paper that is recommended by the printer manufacturer is a good choice. In other words, if you are using an HP printer you may be best suited using HP photo paper. If you are using an Epson printer at your home or office, you may wish to simply use Epson photo paper. The reason for this is that many of these printers were designed to use their own type of paper. This does not mean that it is mandatory that you use only the manufacturer's type photo paper, but for most general uses, it is a good idea to use what is recommended as that type of photo paper has been tested for that particular brand of printer.

In some cases such as the Epson photo quality inkjet paper you will be using a top quality paper anyway so the time spent searching for a better quality paper is somewhat wasted time. If you feel the need to do some research, however, you might want to narrow it down to learning the difference between Epson and HP photo paper. Narrowing your research can save you a lot of time.

Under the brand category, you may, for example, want to use Kodak photo paper if you are using Kodak film in your camera. Again, the reason for this is that the film and the photo paper have been developed in tandem which can often result in better quality output.

Using laser paper for photo generation will often produce the best results but you can use specialty type papers at times such as canvas photo paper or glossy photo paper. These applications may require special set up procedures so be sure to read up on the instructions before attempting your production.
