Digital Storage Devices
Digital photo storage devices are a big concern for the photographer, whether he is a professional or just the average vacation photographer. Memory cards only hold so much data, and when you are on a long vacation, the average size memory card probably won't hold enough pictures. So what is the amateur – or professional – photographer to do?
The best digital photo storage device on the market right now is the CompactFlash card. These work with all digital cameras that were made after 2004. As a digital storage device, these cards are fantastic. They have more storage space than any other digital storage devices. And as a portable digital storage device, they are perfect because they are small and easy to put into your camera bag.
Digital storage devices like the CompactFlash card can hold a good deal more data than the average 512MB memory card that comes standard with your digital camera. Where a 512MB memory card can hold between 56 and 170 images (depending on the resolution of the photos), the CompactFlash card can hold a good deal more. CompactFlash cards come in sizes that range from 1GB to the newest addition, the whooping 12GB card.
The average vacationing amateur photographer will definitely not need the 12GB CompactFlash card. In fact, these are extremely expensive and because of this and the sheer enormity of their size, most people choose the smaller sized digital storage devices like the 1GB or 2GB cards.
If you are interested in getting a CompactFlash card or something similar, you will need to get a Compact Flash drive or other card reader that is compatible with the type of digital storage devices you have for your camera. Since the cards are not large enough nor are they the same format as any other drive, you will need the special card reader or drive to transfer your pictures from your card to your computer.
If you don't want to invest in the drive or card reader, you do have another, cheaper option. Use a USB cable to connect your camera to your computer. Most computers and digital cameras can do this. Make sure that your digital storage device or card is in your camera before you connect it to your computer so the computer can take the pictures off the card through the camera. This is a simpler way to transfer your pictures from digital storage devices to your computer.
